Mechanized drilling operation for conveyance of water from Kani Sib Dam to Lake Urmia will be kicked off in the presence of Energy Ministry Eng. Chichchian.
In a press briefing held at main building of Iran Water and Power Resources Development Company (IWPRDC), Managing Director of the company Eng. Seyyed Mohammad-Reza Rezazadeh said: "Transferring water from Kani Sib Dam to Lake Urmia was one of the programs taken in this regard with the aim of revival of the Lake." Kani Sib Dam is the last point that can transfer water to Lake Urmia gravitationally, he said, adding: "Other projects need pimping water due to their heights which involves a permanent cost for being operational." He also pointed to area around Badinabad River, which is able to enter 300-million cu./meter water, and said: "Major portion of water is transferred behind Kani Sib Dam using a diversion channel as long as 5.9 km." Total of volume of water can transfer approx. 650-million cubic/meter water from behind Kani Sib Reservoir Dam to Lake Urmia with releasing environmental need which exists in that area, he maintained. Turning to the details of components of this project, he said: "A tunnel, as diameter as 5.5m, has been designed for transferring this volume of water inside the Lake Urmia." He put the total length of water conveyance tunnel at 35.3 km which is divided into two parts of 21 and 14 km in its output and input span respectively. For this aim, two Tunneling Boring Machines (TBM) of Double Shield Hard Rock type, have been purchased which have been manufactured by French NFM Company, he said, adding: "The purchased TBMs are of double-crust type which are used for drilling hard rocks and will be put into operation in very near future." With regard to commissioning second purchased TBM, he said: "Another TBM will be imported into the country in Feb. and it is hoped that the drilling device will start working in next Iranian calendar year (to start March 21, 2016)." He put the timeline for Kani Sib water conveyance project to the Lake Urmia at beginning of 2019, in other words, this water conveyance project to the Lake will become operation till the end of 2019. He also put the rials-currency cost of this giant project at 1,600 billion rials. The managing director pointed out that the Lake Urmia lacks water volume as much as 15 to 30 billion cubic meter, adding: "Once this project is put into operation, 650 million cubic meter water will be supplied to the Lake Urmia annually." Therefore, other projects should be constructed around the Lake in order to witness revival of Lake Urmia once again. In the end, Managing Director of Iran Water and Power Resources Development Company (IWPRDC) Eng. Seyyed Mohammad-Reza Rezazadeh said: "Approx. 5 million people live around the Lake Urmia and agricultural land areas have increased "threefold" in previous 25 years. It should be noted that Kani Sib Dam is located approx. 15 km southeast Piranshahr, which is measured as high as 50 m with the capacity of producing 330 million cubic meter water."
