News: Upper-Gotvand (Gotvand-Olya) Dam Embankment Completed

Upper-Gotvand (Gotvand-Olya) Dam Embankment Completed

The embankment of Upper-Gotvand , 182m high, completed according to Eghbalmanesh, the manager of civil department in Upper-Gotvand Dam and Hydro Power Plant Project announcing the news.
"The volume of materials used for construction of 760 m long and 182 m high embankment surpasses 32 million m3.",he added.
"Since 2009, construction work of Upper-Gotvand accelerated so rapidly that more than 9.2 and 8.2 million m3 of materials dumped and compacted in two consecutive years.", he declared.
He also said that Upper-Gotvand holds Iran's daily and monthly record in dumping and compaction of embankment materials. In year 2009, coincident with Moslem's great occasion of Eid Al-Ghadir , Upper-Gotvand set the daily record of 51000 m3 dumping and compaction of embankment materials, which bettered Iran's previous record. In addition to daily record set, a monthly record of 1,200,000 m3 was also established in December, 2009.
Setting these records had significant effect on project and opened up new horizons for impounding.
Amazing successes experienced during project led on to initial impounding of dam in August 2009 and completion of embankment in following November.
"Construction of Upper-Gotvand started in August 2004 with dumping of lower downstream shell. Dumping and compaction of clay core began in July , 2006." He added.
Upper-gotvand (Gotvand-olya) earthfill dam, 182 meters high, was impounded in the presence of President Ahmadinejad on Thursday July 30, 2011. Having a 50km long reservoir, it currently holds more than 290 million m3 of water.
The dam controls devastating floods of Karun and minimizes drought impacts in Khuzestan Province.
Upper-gotvand reservoir is second to Karkheh, Iran's biggest reservoir. It can provide Khuzestan with more than 4.5 billion m3 of water. This is the longest reservoir so far built on Karun, as well as Iran's second longest reservoir after Karkheh's.
Upper-gotvand dam, located 5 kilometers away Gotvand city in Khuzestan, is currently the highest earth-fill dam in Iran.
