Iran Declares Self-sufficiency in Dam Construction by Inauguration Karun 4 Dam

Text

In the year of "Economic Jihad" Iran celebrates self-sufficiency in dam construction by inaugurating Karun 4 Dam, the highest double arch dam in Iran.
According to a report released by PR office of IWPCO announcing the news, Rezazadeh, the Chief Executive Officer of the company in a group of reporters and correspondents stated "The ceremony of self-sufficiency is held simultaneously with inauguration of Karun 4 in the presence of high-ranking State officials.
Considering Karun4 project schedule, he added the first study phase of Karun 4 started in 1995, followed by the second phase in 1997. Diversion of water then proceeded in 1997. The construction of power plant began in 2001, and mass concreting of dam body started in 2006.
Karun 4, the highest double arch dam of Iran, was impounded on March, 25th 2010. The whole study, design and construction phases were accomplished by domestic engineers, which in turn dominates it over other Iran's projects.
"The success achieved was merely through faith in God, self-esteem and confidence in domestic engineers. He also mentioned some other contributing factors such as upgrading technical qualitative and quantitative management systems and application of research outcomes into decision makings.
Rezazadeh stated, nowadays, we claim that we can count on our domestic prominent consulting companies and research institutes. Based on our National Developed Construction Codes, we are able to build high-qualified complex large-scale concrete dams and save country's resources.
Karun 4 Dam, 230 meters high from foundation, withheld more than 2 billion cubic meters within 16 months after impounding.
Data analysis of installed instrumentation in Karun 4 confirms the overall good behavior of dams and abutments. He also hoped the power plant would run at full capacity and generate electricity in the following summer.
He declared that three units are now operating, and since its operation, Karun 4 has generated more than 700 GWH of clean hydro power energy.
"Last year, within less than three months, three hydro power units of Karun 4 were put into operation. The duration is half the conventional time spent comparing to other projects."
He also mentioned some of the records established in the project as mass concreting of 62000, 82000 and 89000 cubic meters per month in the years 2007 and 2008 and stated they are unrivalled in middle-east.
The project also set the record of 34000 meters of drilling and grouting per a month at its peak.
He also added that reduction of the cement from 220 kg to 165 per a cubic meter of concrete, unprecedentedly led to saving about 4 million USD.
Karun 4 dam underground and open-cut excavation reached more than 5 million (m3), while concreting volume surpassed 2.1 million (m3). He also said the implemented length of drilling and grouting was about 450kms.
Totally, 57 kms of access road was constructed. He also stated Iran's longest arch bridge with the length of 380m and span length of 300 m is under construction. The project progress reaches 46 percent.
Total approved budget for Karun 4 project is about 1.2 billion USD. So far, the project has cost about 850 million USD and 350 million USD is necessary to accomplish the project. He also said project land acquisition cost about 10 million USD.
Karun 4, located 180 south west of Shahrekord in Iran, was constructed to regulate Karun River. It can yearly regulate 3.7 billion (m3) of water and generate 2107 GWH electricity. The dam was impounded on March, 25th 2010 in the presence of President Ahmadinejad
